Wheat Ridge Police Department Shares Update About the Peter Arguello Case

Following an intensive investigation into the death of Peter Arguello, who was shot and killed at his business on the 7200 block of W 38th Ave. on Nov. 29, 2023, the Wheat Ridge Police Department (WRPD) has recommended criminal charges against Charles Robinson Shay (DOB 1/10/83) in this case.
Shay has been in custody at the Jefferson County Detention Facility since 12/27/23 on charges related to burglarizing Arguello’s business on the day after Christmas.
On Thursday, January 18, 2024, we recommended the following charges against Shay to our partners at the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office:
-Murder in the first degree, C.R.S. 18-3-102 (1) (a), a class 1 felony
-Murder in the second degree, C.R.S. 18-3-103 (1) (a), a class 2 felony
-Murder in the second degree, C.R.S. 18-3-103 (1) (b), a class 2 felony
While the department has recommended criminal charges against one individual, the case remains active and ongoing. WRPD remains confident that the community is safe.
“We want to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this complicated criminal investigation,” said Wheat Ridge Police Chief Chris Murtha. “I’m proud of the dedication of our patrol officers and our entire Investigation Bureau in handling this case.
