Foothills Animal Shelter provides low-cost spay and neuter clinics in an effort to reduce pet overpopulation.
Why should you spay or neuter your companion pet?
Spaying or neutering your pet can help prevent a variety of health and behavioral issues. This procedure can prevent certain cancers and reduces the pet population and the cost of caring for unwanted litters of animals. It can also prevent behaviors such as running at large, to look for a mate, marking indoors and with some animals it may prevent aggression.
At what age is my pet eligible for this procedure?
Dogs and cats need to be a minimum of 16 weeks or 4 months in age. If your pet is older than 5 years old it should be examined by a licensed veterinarian prior to this type of surgery.

Foothills Animal Shelter provides a variety of pet related services such as spay/neuter clinics, pet surrender, end of life services, low cost vaccinations and micro-chipping.

Meet Tag! Tag, Cody's new dog is here to remind everyone about the importance of annual vaccinations and licensing your pet! Meet Tag! He is Cody the Code Ranger's new pet dog, and they are working together with the Community Services Team to provide information on all animal related ordinances. Whenever you see Cody and Tag you will find helpful information on being a responsible pet owner in the City of Wheat Ridge.
The Wheat Ridge Police Department is happy to announce a new service provided for the convenience of our dog-owners!
All dogs older than 4 months residing in the City of Wheat Ridge and most of the Jefferson county municipalities are required by law to license their dogs. Dog licenses must be renewed annually. Citizens can purchase mandatory dog licenses at the records window of the Wheat Ridge Police Department at 7500 W. 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge, CO 80033.
- The annual license fee for a spayed/neutered and unaltered dogs is $20.
- Cash or Checks made out to the City of Wheat Ridge. No credit or debit card payments accepted.
- Open from 8-5pm Monday through Friday, at the Police Dept. Records window. (except holidays)
- License application may be accessed online or applications are available at the Wheat Ridge Police Department. Application must also be accompanied by proof of vaccination by licensed Veterinarian.
