The Wheat Ridge Police Department is proud to announce that it will be hosting the next session of its Citizen Police Academy. The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to give community members who live and/or work in the City of Wheat Ridge an opportunity to learn first-hand about the inner workings of the Wheat Ridge Police Department. Police and civilian personnel will present lectures and demonstrations to give Citizen Police Academy participants an understanding of the department’s mission, practices, and operations. The Citizen Police Academy is not designed to train community members as police officers nor to give civilians police authority of any kind. The police department will consider applicants who have never participated in a WRPD Citizen’s Police Academy and/or:
· live, work, or volunteer in the City of Wheat Ridge
· are 18 years of age or older
· are willing to sign a Waiver of Liability
· have no felony convictions
· have no domestic violence convictions
· are not registered sex offenders
· have no serious misdemeanor convictions
The Citizen Police Academy is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. Classes will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Wednesday night through October 30, 2024 (8 weeks). The final class meeting will consist of a graduation ceremony to celebrate the attendees’ completion of the Academy. Topics presented during this Citizen Police Academy will include:

· Relationship Based Policing
· Patrol Operations
· Investigations Process
· Municipal Court Procedures
· SWAT
· Use of Force Considerations
· Crime and Traffic Team
· Community Service/Animal Control
· Firearms/Simulator
· Ride Along with a Patrol Officer
