Building Permits
Starting August 1, 2023, The City of Wheat Ridge will be enforcing the 2023 National Electric Code, as adopted by the State of Colorado. All plans and permits submitted on and after this date will be subject to this code. All plans and permits before this date will be subject to the 2020 National Electric Code.

When Do You Need A Permit?
A building permit is required for new construction, additions, or alterations. Examples of projects that require building permits are:
- New buildings
- Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU)
- Room additions
- Demolition & Asbestos Abatement
- Roofing
- Decks
- Porch Covers
- Hot tubs and swimming pools (in-ground & above ground, over 24" deep)
- Retaining walls (over 4' high or supporting a surcharge)
- Storage sheds (over 120 SF of floor area)
- Signs
- Exterior irrigation systems
- Interior remodels
- Basement and tenant finishes
- Electrical service changes
- Air conditioners and swamp coolers
- Carports
- Awnings (extending over 54" from exterior wall)
- Furnace, boiler, and water heater replacement
- Window change or alterations
- Siding
