When will my street be plowed?: The City treats pre-determined first and second priority roadways with deicing materials prior to snow storms to prevent formation of snowpack and ice. First priority roadways (red routes) include main streets, collectors, routes to schools, firehouses, and hospital accesses. Second priority roadways ( green routes) include minor collector streets and third priority (green routes) include hilly residential streets. The City will plow residential streets only after there is an accumulation of at least 12 inches of snow.

2. How many snow plows does the City use during a storm?: Usually there are four plow trucks operating on the streets at any given time during a storm. Operations Division

3. Does the City apply sand to the streets during a snow storm?: The City no longer uses sand as a traction aid in the winter, except in extremely cold conditions. Instead, a combination of granular and liquid de-icers is used for anti-icing and de-icing operations. Snow & Ice Control Policy

4. Who do I call to report a pothole in the street?: City of Wheat Ridge Right of Way pothole repair is performed by the Public Works Operation Division. CDOT-Colorado Dept of Transportation maintains Sheridan, Wadsworth, Kipling and Ward Rd.

5. What is the City's street sweeping schedule?: Typically all paved streets in the City are swept four times per year. Paved alleys are swept once annually, usually in the Spring Street Sweeping Policy

6. Are property owners required to shovel their sidewalks when it snows?: On October 24, 2016, City Council passed Council Bill No. 24-2016, amending the Wheat Ridge Code of Laws to add a new section entitled Removal of Snow and Ice from Sidewalks. Under this new ordinance, sidewalks are the responsibility of the adjacent property owners. Property owners will be required to clear walkways within 24 hours of snowfall equaling 2 inches or more.

7. Who maintains I-70, Sheridan, Wadsworth, Kipling and Ward Road?: These streets are State highways. CDOT maintains the roadway surface between the curbs, with the exception of Kipling north of 49th Avenue and south of 51st Avenue. This 2 block section is maintained by the City.

8. Who is responsible for the culvert under my driveway?: The homeowner is responsible for the repair and replacement of driveway culverts. The City cleans driveway culverts to provide proper storm drainage. To report a drainage problem call (303) 205-7615.

9. What do I do if I want to have a street light installed on my street?: The first step in the process is to call the Engineering Division at (303) 235-2846 or email Engineering@ci.wheatridge.co.us. Engineering will evaluate the need for additional illumination. If it is determined that a street light is warranted, a petition form will be sent to you to obtain signatures from property owners who will be affected by the new light (This information will be provided to you.) Once the form is returned to Engineering, a cost estimate is requested from Xcel Energy. If the cost is acceptable and funds are available, payment will be made and Xcel will schedule installation.
