1. Q: Are there additional court costs if I wish to appear in court?

Yes. There are court costs and/or additional fees that will be assessed at sentencing.

2. Q: What are the Y-DAP (Youth Drug Abuse Prevention program) classes offered to first-time defendants (under 21) charged with an alcohol possession/consumption or a misdemeanor drug related offense?

The Y-DAP class is offered by the Denver Family Therapy Center to youth under the age of 21 that have been charged for the first time with Possession/Consumption Alcohol, Possession/Consumption of Marijuana, and/or Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Y-DAP is a drug and alcohol prevention and education program for adolescents, young adults, and families. Once the certificate of completion is provided to the Court, the charges may be dismissed.

3. Q: What if I fail to pay my fine?

The Court may issue a bench warrant for your arrest. In some circumstances, the Judge may issue a hold on your driver’s license. The bench warrant may lead to incarceration.

4. Q: Do you have payment plans?

Fines and costs are due and payable at the time they are assessed by the Court.

5. Q: Can I have an extension to complete the class/classes that the Court ordered me to attend?

No. You must appear on the scheduled court appearance hearing date.

8. Q: What is a restitution hearing?

A restitution hearing is a court proceeding at which evidence of your out-of-pocket expenses is submitted to the court. Your claimed loss may be contested by the defendant at the restitution hearing.

9. Q: Am I entitled to restitution?

If you are requesting reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred as a victim in any pending Wheat Ridge cases, restitution is possible. You must file written documentation with this court. Call the main court number at 303-235-2835 for information regarding due dates for the documents. Wheat Ridge Court does not order restitution in traffic or civil matters.

10. Q: How long do Wheat Ridge Protection Orders remain in effect?

Protection orders issued in this Court usually remain in effect for one (1) year or as designated on the order. This Court issues restraining orders in all Domestic Violence cases.

11. Q: Will I be on probation for my case?

Not all cases are eligible for probation. The Judge will determine whether someone will be put on probation.

12. Q: How do I drop the charges against someone?

An individual may not. Only the Prosecuting Attorney can request that charges be dropped against someone.

13. Q: How can I request records from my court case?

14. Q: I was ordered by the Judge to take a class, but I lost the contact information. How do I find it?

If you know the name of the business and the name of the class which you were ordered to take, then you can look through the list of classes on the list attached below. If you have no idea which class you need to take, then please contact the Court Clerk's Office at (303) 235-2835 and we will be more than happy to assist you in finding that information.
